Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is considered one of the most cheapest ways to cosmetically enhance your smile.

Our aim is to provide you with the most appropriate treatment options to ensure a lasting smile.

There are several reasons why teeth discolour, mainly food and beverages, tobacco, mouthwashes, plaque. There are also other factors like certain medicines (tetracycline) genetics, tooth discolourations after root canal therapy and age.

Where do I begin?

At Surfside Dental we offer both the Opalescence home whitening system and the in chair Zoom whitening system.
With the home whitening procedure we First take impressions of your mouth and have special whitening trays made in the laboratory which take about 3-4 days to manufacture. These are the trays we will use for your whitening.

Then the whitening solution gets carefully placed into the whitening trays and worn for about 1-2 hours per day or even the entire night. The whitening should be done for about 2 weeks. During this period any staining food or drink should be avoided too optimise results.

With The Philips Zoom in chair whitening procedure the whole procedure takes about 60 to 90 min.

Before we start we take some before photos and determine your starting tooth shade. Generally the patient undergoes four consecutive 15 min exposures with zoom. The results can sometimes be seen within the 1st application already. Once the treatment has been completed we then take a set of after photos of your new tooth shade.

Internal whitening also know as walking bleach technique is a very popular technique primarily used to bleach front teeth that have become darker due to root canal therapy or the nerve has died due to various external factors like trauma and orthodontic movement.

How does it work?

Before starting the walking bleach treatment, existing root canal therapy and all restorations present in the teeth should be at a satisfactory level, About 2mm of the root canal filling gets removed and sealed off with a cavity base. The whitening agent is then placed inside the tooth and sealed off. On average the whitening agent stays in your tooth for about 2-5 days. It is important at this stage that the patient monitors the shade of the tooth. If the tooth whitens quickly and the desired tooth shade has been reached you will have to come back sooner to have the whitening agent removed.

In some cases internal whitening of dark teeth does not give you the desired result you want. In cases like that we recommend placing a full coverage crown or a veneer on the tooth
