Paediatric Dentistry

At Surfside Dental we aim to promote family dentistry, with encouraging early first examinations for children from the age of two onwards.

Baby or Primary teeth consists of our first set of teeth to develop. We expect to have twenty primary teeth present after the age of two. Around the age of six we start to see the eruption of Adult or Permanent teeth.

At this stage the first permanent molar will erupt behind the present primary molars and the permanent incisors (front teeth) will replace the primary incisors. This is when everyone gets exited about the tooth fairy and when your dentist wants to ensure that teeth are in correct positions.

Our primary dentition is very important in maintaining space for the permanent teeth and forms a basic part of the development of our mouths. This is where correct early oral hygiene practices, as well as dental examinations are vital.

When assessing and treating a young mouth we need to ensure that the primary teeth are cavity free and that our early adult teeth are protected against decay. Examinations, Oral hygiene instructions, Cleanings, Fluoride treatments, Fissure Sealants and Fillings all have their respective roles in the treatment and maintenance of your child’s teeth and oral health.

A great majority of our young patients are treated comfortably and successfully in the chair and we encourage this in our practice. We do however have access to local theatres for treatment should this be required.

At Surfside Dental we aim to promote family dentistry, with encouraging early first examinations for children from the age of two onwards. We are happy to see you and your baby at any stage should you have questions regarding the young developing mouth and the associated hygiene needs.
